Wall Lamp Using Mason Jar

Hi All,

We generate a lot of e-wastes, and mobile chargers are one of the biggest contributors, in this instructable, I will share how to reuse an old mobile charger, scrap wooden plywood, and a mason jar to make a lamp

Step 1: What Do We Need?

  • A scrap wooden plywood (19mm or .075 inch)
  • Mason Jar
  • Old Mobile charger
  • Fairy-led lights (10M)
  • Electric wires
  • Soldering Iron
  • Electric tape
  • Drilling machine

Step 2: Design Elements

  • Design Elements
  • We want the wires to be hidden
  • The lid is strong enough to hold the jar's weight
  • The shelf can be attached to the base using screws
  • Fairy LED lights instead of a regular bulb

Step 3: Cutting

  • Cut 4" planks - 2 pieces
  • Measure the diameter of the jar, mine was 3.5"
  • Based on that, cut one of them 1" extra,
  • So we have two planks with dimensions: 4"x8.5" and 4"x4.5"

Step 4: The base

  • We need holes in the base
  • Electric wire
  • 2 holes for the shelf
  • 2 holes for hanging the lamp on the wall
  • And a gap for hiding wire joints

Step 5: The shelf

  • On the shelf, we need holes for
  • Electric wire and path
  • 2 holes in the base
  • 2 holes for the lid
  • We want the wires to be hidden, drilling may be a bit tricky

Step 6: The Lid

  • Drill holes in the lid, matching the shelf
  • Paint the lid black using spray paint and leave it to dry for a few hours

Step 7: Staining

  • Stain the plywood as shown
  • Fix the shelf and base using screws

Step 8: Electric

  • Carefully break open the old charger
  • Remove metal plugs and solder 2 wires or a 2-core wire to the charger
  • Solder the +ve and -ve of the fairy light
  • Put the charger case back on, we do not want the circuit to be visible

Step 9: Assemble

  • Screw the lid in place
  • Pull the electric wire through the lid, shelf, and finally through the base, as shown
  • Superglue the charger in place
  • Initially, I left the USB connector on the fairy led lights, but later soldered the lights directly on the charger

Step 10: Testing

  • Before we finalize everything, test the lamp
  • I found that my LEDs were not properly soldered so had to re-solder them

Step 11: Hanging

  • Drill holes in the wall
  • Connect the electric wires
  • Hang the lamp and switch-on
  • Admire the lamp

Hope you like the lamp and are inspired to make one
