Kitchen Organizer for spices

Hi All,

In India, we use several types of spices and during cooking, it may get chaotic and messy. To solve this problem, in the market there are many spices organizers available. These organizers come with new jars which may be a smaller or lesser number/quantity, which but not fit with one's needs

This project was made for a friend who wanted to organize spices in her kitchen.

Features

  • Customized for storing existing small and big jars
  • 3 different heights to place jars, easy view
  • Edge raised to avoid jars from falling
  • Waterproof paint
  • Made from scrap plywood
  • Elegant and strong

Hope you like the process

Supplies

  • 8mm (5/16") Plywood
  • 19mm (3/4") Plywood
  • Popsicle sticks
  • PVA glue
  • Nails
  • Marie Coat / Wood polish

Tools

  • Hex saw
  • Jigsaw
  • Nails
  • Hammer
  • Paper/masking tape

Step 1: Designing

  • I used Web Sketchup to create a 3d model
  • It is free to use and very intuitive to use
  • If any adjustment is needed, we can adjust it virtually
  • Helps me get dimensions of all pieces and avoid errors

Step 2: Cutting

  • Based on the design, cut the plywood
  • Shelves: 4", 3.5" and 3"
  • Pillars: 9.5"
  • Each step is approx 1.5" tall
  • I used a jigsaw to cut plywood
  • Place the shelves on the pillars to see everything fits
  • If needed adjust or trimmer edges

Step 3: Shelve Edges

  • To avoid jars from slipping and falling from the shelves, we need to add an edge on all sides.
  • This was done using wider popsicle sticks
  • First trimmer the rounder edges of each popsicle sticks
  • Stick 4 sets of 3 sticks together as shown
  • Let this dry for 1 to 2 hrs

Step 4: Assembling

  • Apply PVA glue on the pillars and shelves
  • Use fine nails to fix the shelves in place
  • Using PVA glue, stick the edges for the shelves
  • Note that I have covered all 4 edges for the top shelf, the remaining shelves have edges on 3 sides only
  • Use paper/masking tape to keep the popsicle sticks in place
  • Let this dry for 2 hours
  • Once everything has dried, check every joint and make sure everything is glued properly
  • If needed, apply supports and glue and let things dry

Step 5: Painting

  • Sand the shelf with 150 grit and 220 grit sandpaper
  • I have used Marinekoat paint
  • Marinekoat is dark brown in color and leaves the wood with a glossy finish
  • It is water-resistant paint on plywood
  • We need 3 coats and each coat dries in 15 to 20 minutes
  • If you do not have this then use wood stain and polish it
